The so-called Golden Age of Hollywood was an era of American cinema that spanned from the 1910s to the early 1960s, producing some of Hollywood’s most memorable movies and acclaimed stars such as Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne, and Janet Leigh. Bel Air, CA
Sold: $5,200,000Somewhere over the rainbow Judy Garland enjoyed a slice of her Hollywood starlet years in a gorgeous Bel Air estate on Stone Canyon Road. The custom, Wallace Neff-designed home was on the market earlier this year with an asking price of $5.5 million. As it turns out, Garland’s former home was a hot Los Angeles real estate commodity. The 5-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom estate went into escrow after just one week on the market. Public records shows the property sold for $5.2 million.

Elizabeth Taylor’s home (above)

For Sale: $8,600,000Silver-screen legend and one of the Golden Ages’ biggest stars, Elizabeth Taylor, lived in many places during her six-decade career. Her most recent home, which she lived in from 1981 up until her death at age 79 this past March, just hit the Bel Air real estate market. Current list price is $8.6 million.
Taylor’s former home, previously owned by Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy Sinatra, is set on 1.27 meticulously maintained acres at the end of a gated drive. The private, ranch-style property features a 7,000-sq ft house with 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms, a sitting room, gallery-style kitchen, outdoor pool and patio, and maid’s quarters.

John Wayne’s home (above)
Newport Beach, CA
Sold: $1,775,000Tinseltown’s favorite tough guy, John Wayne, once relaxed from his on-screen ruggedness at his Newport Beach home overlooking Big Canyon golf course. Described as “Versailles” in style, the surprisingly elegant pad was recently for sale, first entering the Newport Beach real estate market in August 2010 for $2,263,000. A few months and two price cuts later, Wayne’s former home finally found a buyer just last week for $1,775,000 — that’s a 21.6 percent discount for you math wizards. Selling after a price cut isn’t out of the ordinary for home in the Newport Beach area, though. According to Zillow Real Estate Market Reports, over a quarter of Newport Beach listings received a price cut in the last month alone.
Wayne’s not-so-macho property features 4,448-sq ft, 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a two-story living room, marble fireplace, den, maid’s room, pool, and gazebo.

For Sale: $2,995,000The sultan of suave, few could resist the debonair presence of actor, Cary Grant. Unfortunately, Grant’s former Palm Springs estate doesn’t have quite the same appeal. According to Curbed, the 1.5-acre home that the classic Hollywood star used as his retreat for nearly two decades, has been patiently waiting on the Palm Springs real estate market since May 2008. The walled and gated property, built as a replica of a 19th-century Spanish farmhouse, took a $1.5 million price cut and now sits with a $2,995,000 price tag. The 6,000-sq ft home includes a master suite with fireplace, balconies, and built-in dressing room, five additional bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, five fireplaces, a Wallace Neff-designed guest wing, studio, a great room with 40-ft ceilings, courtyards, and a saline swimming pool.

For Sale: $4,500,000The contemporary home once owned by “Psycho” star, Janet Leigh, hit the market this past April for $4.5 million. A Beverly Hills real estate gem, the gated and private property includes over 4,400 sq ft with 4 bedrooms, a living room with two-sided fireplace, an outdoor living space with a kitchen and cabana-style deck, pool, and tennis court, not to mention 4.5 bathrooms… with rarely used showers? Apparently Leigh preferred a bath to a shower after her landmark (and award-winning) scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller. After Leigh watched the scene on the big screen she realized “how truly vulnerable we are” and steered clear of the shower for a while.

Marilyn Monroe’s home (above)

Sold: $3,850,000Even though this screen siren’s early death was one of Hollywood’s shocking tragedies, Marilyn Monroe still remains one of Hollywood’s greatest female stars. The white stucco home in which Marilyn died in August 1962 was recently on the Brentwood real estate market with a $3,595,000 asking price. Curbed LA mentioned Marilyn paid just $90,000 for the 4-bedroom, 3-bathroom home when she purchased it in 1962. Just two months after hitting the market, the historic property, built in 1929, sold above asking price for $3,850,000. Maybe the new buyers paid extra for the company of Marilyn’s ghost?

Bela Lugosi’s home (above)

For Sale: $2,367,000“I am Dracula.” That line made Hungarian actor, Bela Lugosi, go down in history as the original Count Dracula — a role he is known for playing both on Broadway and the silver screen. For the first time in 40 years, Lugosi’s “Castle La Paloma” is looking for new owners. The 5,000-sq ft home, constructed in 1926, hit the Hollywood Hills real estate market last month with an asking price of $2,367,000 — a rich increase from the $72,000 the current residents paid back in 1972.
According to the listing description, features of the 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom property include a “ballroom-sized living room, formal dining room with magnificent iron bay windows, library, huge scale kitchen area, breakfast room, butler’s pantry, and service wing.”

Steve McQueen’s home (above)

For Sale: $799,000Known as both “The King of Cool” and one of the highest-paid actors from the 1960s, Steve McQueen came along at the end of Hollywood’s so-called “Golden Age” but still made his mark on the black-and-white big screen. The “Bullitt” star’s last home is part of the Santa Paula real estate market and is now for sale for $799,000. As previously reported on Zillow, McQueen’s residence at the 15.33-acre ranch was short-lived. McQueen purchased the property in 1979 but passed away from mesothelioma in late 1980.
McQueen’s Santa Paula home consists of a 4,500-sq ft airplane hangar, three acres of Syrah vineyards, a full equestrian facility and rows of fruit trees. The original Victorian-style home, built in 1892 still stands and boasts 3,000-sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2.27 bathrooms, wine cellar, and a gourmet kitchen that has been updated with modern appliances.
