Trick or Treat! The Top 10 Haunted Homes For Sale

Week Of Tue: 10-25-2011

10.

Ozzie the Ghost!
Some people believe the Ozzie & Harriet home is haunted, but of course in Hollywood where creativity is the norm, there will always be creative gossip. If we had to pick a ghost, charming Ozzie would be a pretty nice guy to have around.

This traditional 5,813sf home was built in 1916 and was the set for The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet that ran from 1952 to 1966, the longest running TV show until The Simpsons recently topped it. Located on almost a half acre, the home consists of 5 bedrooms and 4 baths. The house is very private at the end of a cul-de-sac and is gated. The grounds contain a guest house, separate office and pool. The interior has period details throughout and the home is ready to move into as is or can be renovated at the new owners‘ option. If you're extremely lucky, maybe you'll see Ozzie happily puttering around the yard, though we wouldn't suggest you hold your breath. Priced at $4,245,500. Deal Source: hauntedhouses.com

9.

Abandoned Ohio Mansion!
Ghosts might be afraid to go anywhere near Mike Tyson but it looks like something very scary happened at Tyson's former Ohio mansion. The home is complete with a spooky moss covered indoor swimming pool, a massive trashed living room, holes punched through walls, and rusty tiger cages. The boxer lived here for a period in the 1990's and it has sat abandoned ever since. Now on the market, possibly many of the problems have since been resolved, though the agent is clear about the buyer needing to return it to its former “luster“.

On a very private 60 acres of open and wooded land that adjoins a golf course, this almost 10,000sf property in rural Ohio has 5 bedrooms, 7.5 baths and large indoor pool. There is also a separate guard house with another 4-5 additional bedrooms. Grounds have paved walking paths, a basketball court, large decks and . . . large animal cages. We suggest a large Halloween party before renovations begin. No decorating will be involved. Priced at $1,300,000, tiger cages included. Deal Source: realliving.com

8.

$15 Million LA Haunted House?
Sitting vacant for over 16 years unfinished, this house was said to be plagued by alien spacecraft, is said to be sitting on top of an Indian burial ground, was beloved by gangs, addicts and Satanists. The butt of rumors that have become urban legend, the house's history has even become a storyline on a “Law and Order” episode! It is currently for sale at the listed price of $15,200,000. Sitting on 22 acres of the last undeveloped land in LA, the 9,800sf house has 5 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a 200 bottle wine cellar, six-car garage, stone floors and a pool with Jacuzzi that has a view over the acreage, the city and the Pacific. From the windows you can see snow-capped mountains and the Hollywood sign. There is a 24/7 armed guard on duty now to keep bad spirits away and to prevent damage. Though unlikely that aliens will land or that spirits will arise from some unproven Indian burial ground, the property will likely entice a developer attracted by the land. Ghostly rumors, however, will likely be around for many years to come. Deal Source: redfin.com

7.

John Brown Hanging Site!
In historic Charles Town, WV, where Abolitionist Brown met his demise in 1859, 30 years later this grand Victorian was built on the site of his hanging. The land on which it sits was owned by one of the men that captured Brown and who later built a home here. Though the house itself has never been considered to be haunted, its location is one of the most historic in the country. The craftsmanship both in the exterior brick work, turret and widow's walk and in the interior millwork sets this house apart, making it the most notable piece of architecture in Charles Town. The 4-story, 7,037sf home has 5 bedrooms, 5 baths Tiffany glass, handmade shutters and exceptional mantels.

Of John Brown, historian David Reynolds contends that “not only was Brown "right" on slavery and other racial issues of his day, but that his conduct--in causing the Civil War to begin in 1861 rather than, say, 1881--potentially saved hundreds of thousands of lives that could have been lost in a war fought in a time of much greater population and more deadly weaponry and, at the same time, might well have spared an entire generation of African-Americans the humiliating experience of human bondage.” Asking $1,200,000. 6.

5.

Psycho Murder Victim's House!
What do you immediately think of when you hear the name “Janet Leigh?” “Psycho”, of course! You picture her in the shower and you picture that dark Victorian horror of a house on top of the hill overlooking the Bates Motel. Right? We all do! Produced by Alfred Hitchcock, it was a well-scripted, well-cast, horror film, with scenes that would terrify even the most avid horror lover. . . the Victorian house in the film was likely the scariest movie house of all time.

Now Janet Leigh's own former home is for sale and far from being a horror. It has understated clean architectural lines, paved car park, privacy, gated entrance and no ghosts anywhere in sight. Styled in Contemporary Transitional, the design is timeless both inside and out. The perfect home for an avid art collector, the floors are ebony and the walls white, offering exceptional display options. The layout is perfect for entertaining as the public rooms spill out to the patios and stunning views over Hollywood and out over the Pacific. At just over half an acre, the 4,432sf home has 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, pool and tennis courts. This property will give your mind a new vision when hearing the name “Janet Leigh” and all thoughts of horror will be long forgotten! Asking $3,950,000. Deal Source: 1625summitridge.com

4.

America's Scariest Haunted House!
Not for the faint of heart, this 100-year-old farm house near Olean, NY, is very well known to locals and to all paranormal investigators across the country. Even the History Channel featured it in a special. The house has a history of frightening off its past owners since the 1850's with its 12 or more not-so-friendly ghosts who are frequently seen in their entirety by neighbors, friends, guests, researchers, paranormal investigators and the clergy. In her book, “Echoes of a Haunting”, by one-time resident, Clara M. Miller, she explained the feeling about the house as a build up of pressure under an umbrella that finally releases in the form of activity from these clearly visible spirits. Clara wrote her book from her daily diary and goes into great detail about events that happened there and some she felt might have been related to the house years after moving to Oregon.

Though obviously needing a total renovation, there are many who will be hugely excited about its availability. On 8 acres, the house presently consists of a kitchen, bath, living room, 3 bedrooms and two enclosed porches and a large spring-fed pond. Many seem to think it would make a great research facility for paranormal researchers or equally as an attractive single-family home after renovation. . . . if you have nerves of steel! 100 + year old farm house & stage-coach stop has 12 ghosts. Asking $289,000. Deal Source: wnyhauntedhouse.com

3.

The Dean Martin Ghost of Edina, MN
According to their story, Dean Martin stayed at this Minnesota home in 1970 when he was filming the movie “Airport” and he never left. They believe that "Dino" is just one of a number of spirits that haunt this house, which was built near an old Indian funeral site. The owners report numerous incidents of flying tables and beds, exploding water pipes, invisible people and dogs, pounding noises, images of a bloody face in their mirror, missing objects, ice-cold urine pools and a grotesque, hairless cat with glowing eyes and a human's smile. The spirit activity was noticed to increase when the family was preparing to move. The son seems to feel that the most violent spirit got in due to him and his friends using the Ouija board in the basement, as the violent activity began shortly after that. It is probably no surprise that the home is now vacant and has been on the market since May. Deal Source: squidoo.com

2.

Haunted Horse Farm!
Don't expect to see ghostly horses grazing the fields or be so lucky as to have a ghostly farmhand stacking hay bales. Instead, turn your attention to your digital camera equipment. For some reason, the normally elusive ghosties on this farm love to have their pictures taken! They will pop up in your pastoral shots and in your family videos and have made themselves apparent over 90 times in the last nine years in and around the farm. They show themselves as orbs, darting lights and misty forms when you're trying to capture that perfect sunset or new foal. Having enjoyed writing about her experiences on this property as a paranormal author, the owner is willing to pass this farm on to the next ghost buster to enjoy.

This 5 acre, fully fenced farm consists of 2 barns and a 2002 constructed 3 bedroom, 2 bath house of approximately 1,150sf and is selling furnished. Fields are well-maintained grazing land in the horse country of Lexington, Kentucky. There have been five paranormal investigations in the past two years - all had positive findings. The next chill running up a spine could be yours! Asking $120,000. Deal Source: sdparanormal.com

1.

New Orleans Haunted B&B!
While most going businesses want to keep their ghosts in the closet so as not to frighten off clientele, the Magnolia Mansion has cleverly built its business around multiple ghosts and wish its ghosts would invite their friends! Here the ghosts are friendly with a sense of humor, where ghostly children tease you by moving things around during the night to watch your reaction the next morning. There are reports of a ghostly maid who will tuck you in at night, a child who walks the halls and a bearded man who spends his time downstairs!

Designed by architect James H. Calrow and completed in 1858 from fortunes made from cotton, Magnolia Mansion is one of New Orleans most photographed homes in the Historic Garden District and considered to be one of the most important examples of Antebellum architecture. It was also the headquarters of the American Red Cross during World War II. A raised Greek Revival mansion of approximately 13,369sf, there are 13 bedrooms and 14 full baths that could be changed back into a single-family estate.

A perfect place to hold your “Spooktacular Gatherings” and “Ghostly Galas!“ Asking price is $3.2M. Deal Source: magnoliamansion.com

Luxury back in fashion despite downturn

Updated    |    -->

The market for luxury goods has come back with a bang in the past couple of years, despite volatility elsewhere in the market.

Developing markets such as China are causing huge excitement in companies such as Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey (LVMH) and PPR, owner of Gucci and Bottega Veneta.

Angela Ahrendts, chief executive of Burberry, told CNBC: "For us, it's about reach, it's about awareness, and then about engagement with the consumers."

Global sales of luxury goods will reach 185 billion euros ($254 billion) in 2011, according to consultants Bain & Co.

"The global industry went from recession to resurgence in one year, between 2009-10," Marc-Andre Kamel, head of Bain's luxury practice for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, told CNBC's Luxury Edge.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, chief executive of Rolls Royce, said: "It's not only the bling or the spirit of ecstasy or the logo in itself, it is definitely the substance you're going to buy for your money."

Despite the gloom in much of the Western world, there is still plenty of wealth-creation going on.

Credit Suisse's Second Annual Global Wealth Report shows total global wealth increased 14 percent from January 2010 to June 2011, to $231 trillion from $203 trillion a year and a half ago.

Much of this increase is coming from the Asia-Pacific region, Credit Suisse analysts said.

"There are spots in the world that are still doing well," said Kamel.

Bain predicts that China will become the third-largest luxury market in the world within five years.

So, when worries started growing about a slowdown in China recently, luxury stocks such as Burberry suffered falls.

"Slowdowns are relative in China," said Stephen Lussier, chief executive officer of De Beers' Forevermark. "There's such opportunity for brands in China as we expand into Tier 2 cities."

China's secondary cities are "new territories where everything has to be reinvented," Kamel said.

The Hollywood History of Hotel Bel-Air

The courtyard outside the plush $13,500-a-night (and up) Presidential Suite.

When Hotel Bel-Air is mentioned, the mind suddenly becomes awash in ambrosial images of elegant seclusion and natural wonders. Nestled on Stone Canyon Road, just minutes from the bustling centers of Beverly Hills and Westwood, its quiet reputation has swelled over the years to almost mythic proportions, and there isn’t a celebrity or dignitary worth his or her Guccis who hasn’t graced its hallowed space.

Marilyn Monroe in 1962, posing for her Bert Stern photo shoot.

Over the past couple of years, however, this idyllic portrait has been altered considerably. Although it is generally frowned upon to tinker with works of art, in this case the changes are embraced. Hotel Bel-Air, owned by the Sultan of Brunei’s Dorchester Collection, underwent a comprehensive multimillion-dollar renovation in which just about every aspect of the interior has been nipped, tucked, cleansed, and updated—in fact, it was closed for approximately two years, considered lunacy among the commoners of the hostelry world—leading to its grand reopening last month.

An Icon's New Look
Thanks to the design collaboration of Alexandra Champalimaud and the Rockwell Group—Champalimaud oversaw the rooms and suites for the most part, while Rockwell handled the dining and entertainment venues—the hotel maintains the dashing aesthetic of Spanish Colonial architecture that lured countless members of Hollywood royalty through its corridors for decades with a deft mixture of pleasing indooroutdoor experiences.

The revised furnishings and colors come from an eclectic palette, but follow a consistent theme of understated grace. Changes such as 12 new contemporary hillside guest rooms and three new loft guest rooms with sweeping canyon views; a complete restoration of the bar, restaurant, terrace, ballroom, and boardroom; a new reception area, boutique, and lobby lounge; the new La Prairie spa building; and the residency of Wolfgang Puck for all dining aspects, including the acclaimed Sunday brunch, all combine to push the refresh button on an already revered institution.

All told, the new version boasts a total of 103 guest rooms and suites, including the Presidential Suite, which is actually more of a 6,775-square-foot compound with private dining for 10, a chef’s kitchen, private pool, and grand piano. A one-night stay there begins at a tidy $13,500. The result is a warm feeling of staid familiarity, but with renewed panache.

For actor Robert Wagner—who practically grew up at the hotel—the dining, cocktails, plush accommodations, and glitzy clientele all compete on his personal nostalgia meter. But it always comes back to the horses. “My family moved to Bel-Air in the mid ’30s, when it was mostly stables there,” recalls the legendary Hollywood leading man. “My father had horses, and we used to ride out of there. I had a very good friend who ran a little tearoom. Her son and I and John Derek took care of the horses. I also worked as a pool boy. “Then my mother lived there. I think she was the longest resident of the hotel: 23 years,” says Wagner. “I was a regular and grew up at the stables. I go back [with the hotel] a long time, with a lot of wonderful people.”

Hollywood's Hottest Homes - Video

Hollywood's Hottest Homes

October 27, 2011

California is renowned for its glamorous celebrity estates -- from Hugh Hefner to Michael Jackson, to Aaron Spelling and George Lucas. Take a walk with us through the luxurious residences of some of Hollywood's most famous elite.

Arguably one of the most famous residences in California is the iconic Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills. Built in 1927, this elegant 22-bedroom mansion and its exotic surroundings remain home to the Playboy founder and his many sexy playmates.

In Santa Barbara sits the Neverland Valley Ranch, known to millions worldwide as the lavish residence of the late Michael Jackson. The home -- which the pop star once explained was named after Neverland Island in Peter Pan -- sat on a huge parcel of land and included a floral clock, a petting zoo and a private amusement park.

The famous Skywalker Ranch -- located in open country in California's northern region of San Rafael -- is another prime property that is home to renowned Star Wars director George Lucas, as well as some of his famous friends.

Watch the video to also see the mansion that TV mogul Aaron Spelling built -- the one ranked as America's most expensive home when it went on the market in 2009. To learn more about additional California destinations, click here.

Luxury Real Estate: Beverly Hills Spending Spree - WSJ.com

In August, fashion designer Vera Wang bought a midcentury modern-style home in Beverly Hills for $9 million from real-estate investor and designer Steven Hermann. He'd bought it for $5 million in 2008, then spent more than $3 million on a gut renovation.

Housing remains mired in a slump in most of the country, with nearly one in four homeowners under water. But as Juliet Chung explains on Lunch Break, a handful of bold investors are attempting to make millions on flips of high-end houses.

In nearby Holmby Hills, Lions Gate Entertainment Chief Executive Jon Feltheimer and his wife, Laurie, recently sold a five-bedroom home that they had bought in 2009 for $9.8 million. A family spokesman said the Feltheimers intended to build a new home but sold after deciding the process would be too time-consuming. They got $14.4 million, from Russian soccer player Gurgen Khachatryan.

At a time when luxury homes are making up an increasingly large share of foreclosures, an unexpected number of high-end owners in and near Beverly Hills are demanding—and in some cases getting—millions more for properties they've recently bought.

Brokers say the appetite has remained remarkably healthy for prime property in this area, particularly for renovated homes. For the year to date ended Thursday, 25 homes in the greater Beverly Hills, Bel Air and Holmby Hills area had sold for $10 million or more, according to Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland, a Christie's International Real Estate affiliate. That's more than the 16 and 21 sold over the same period in the hot years of 2006 and 2007.

Photos: For Sale in Beverly Hills

Last summer, Jennifer Aniston sold her nearly 10,000-square-foot Beverly Hills home, which she bought in 2006 for $13.5 million, for $36 million. The actress set a local price-per-square-foot record—$3,600—with the sale. Designed by late architect Harold W. Levitt, the home recalled Bali and featured five bedrooms, extensive stonework and a bridge over a koi pond. A spokesman for Ms. Aniston didn't respond to requests for comment.

Not far from Ms. Aniston's former home is another house designed by Mr. Levitt that's been heavily renovated to include Asian influences. The house went on the market in June asking $14.9 million; it's now asking $10.9 million. Owner Tim Mulcahy says he bought the house speculatively, paying $4.6 million for it last year and spending a further $3.5 million on the renovation. Mr. Mulcahy says he's aware there's a housing downturn but calls Beverly Hills a unique market. "I don't feel I've lost money; I feel that I will have some gain," he adds.

In Beverly Hills' gated enclave of Beverly Park, a European businessman bought a 20,000-square-foot contemporary, sight unseen, for $16.5 million last fall. Now, he is asking $25 million for the house—without having done any work on it.

"We thought, 'Let's throw it up on the market and see what happens,' " says the broker, Josh Altman of Hilton & Hyland, of the home, which sits on nearly seven acres and has a dining room with a grotto and waterfall. The attempted sale makes sense, Mr. Altman says, because he was able to get his client a good price on the home and because similar super-size homes in the area are scarce.

Also testing the waters: Paramount Chairman Brad Grey, who, after buying a home in Holmby Hills in the winter for $18.5 million, put it back on the market in September for $23.5 million. Mr. Grey never intended to sell the property, says his broker, Stephen Shapiro of the Westside Estate Agency. He adds that Mr. Grey decided to sell after renovating another property he owns nearby.

The official website of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, ColdwellBankerMoves.com, recently earned the Real Estate Standard of Excellence award by the Web Marketing Association, marking the first time that the site has been honored with a WebAward by the association.

Now in its 15th year, the WebAward program is an annual website award competition that names the best websites in 96 industries while setting the standard of excellence for all website development. ColdwellBankerMoves.com was judged on design, copy writing, innovation, content, interactivity, navigation and use of technology.

The WebAward competition format allows websites to compete head-to-head with other sites within their industry and against a standard of excellence. The competition was judged by a team of international Internet professionals representing a variety of relevant disciplines of website development.

"Today's homebuyers are extremely Internet savvy," said Hal Maxwell, president of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in New Jersey and Rockland County, NY. "More than 80 percent of people start their home search online. They're seeking out comprehensive and evolving websites to research and gather information. I am very proud to have our website recognized among this elite group."

Coldwell BankerMoves.com, said a company spokesperson, has 50,000 registered users and property listings that are collectively viewed more than 4.7 million times per month. It provides consumers with a more simplified search function, so home searchers can easily find properties by location, address, property type, MLS number and even school district directly from the home page. The search function provides faster search results with at-a-glance details of property listings with multiple views.

In addition to offering home searchers thousands of property listings in Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, ColdwellBankerMoves.com also includes an interactive mapping feature that allows consumers to zoom in, find schools, restaurants, shopping centers and other local attractions and amenities.

Registered users of ColdwellBankerMoves.com can sign up to receive email alerts for new property listings, open houses and price reductions, and can share property details with others through social media, email or print.

The site also contains content to help consumers with various aspects of purchasing and selling a home, including a mortgage advisor tool.

Optimized for mobile devices, consumers can view property listings from their mobile phones while they are on the go. The site showcases property photo slideshows and video technologies such as streaming video tours of properties and sales associates' video resumes.

Coldwell wins national website award. It is so wonderful to be associated with such a great Real Estate company.
