Many people laugh when you tell them you are making a New Year’s resolution. It is a well-known fact that the majority of resolutions are broken before the end of January. However, it is also true that more people make permanent changes in their lives when they make concrete resolutions, than when they simply contemplate doing something. How can you be one of those who keep their resolution? Follow these tips and you will be on your way to success.
Aim High But Not Too High
Set a resolution that is specific and achievable, but one that will take some work. If it is too easy, you will lack the determination to work on it. If it is too hard, you will give up.
For instance, if you want to lose weight, set yourself a goal with a certain number of pounds. A vague goal such as “losing some weight,” won’t keep you motivated. But aiming to lose ten pounds will give you something definite to work towards. Alternatively, trying to lose a hundred pounds will seem overwhelming and you may give up even before you start.
Make it Something Important
If it is important to you or will make your life better, you will be more likely to stick with the resolution. If you want to get organized because it gives you more free time with your family, you will focus more on meeting that goal.
The best way to create an effective goal is to make your resolution and state the reason why you want to achieve it. You may want to lose weight to look good at a class reunion. State that resolution and the reason so you are reminded of the payoff on difficult days.
Be Realistic
You will have good days and bad days with keeping to your resolution. If you don’t beat yourself up when you fail to meet your goal, you are more likely to keep trying. It’s not an all-or-nothing commitment. By allowing yourself to make an occasional mistake you will actually encourage yourself to keep trying.
If your goal is to lose ten pounds in a month but you only lose eight, you have still achieved the main idea behind your resolution. Next month, set the goal again at ten pounds and keep working at it. Define success as not giving up and making progress and you will not feel like a failure.
Making New Year’s resolutions is a tradition for a lot of people. If you want to make a change in your life go ahead and start on January 1. Create a realistic goal that challenges you while being achievable. Make it something important to you, and cheer yourself on when you get close to reaching it. Change begins with the desire to do something different, and is achieved one step at a time.
