LA Eateries May Now Offer Doggie Dining « CBS Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — At many Los Angeles County restaurants, dogs will be made to feel as welcome as their owners under a new policy announced Monday.

Effective immediately, eateries with outdoor dining areas have the option to invite dog owners to chow down with their pets, county officials said.

Though it will be up to each restaurants’ discretion whether to allow animals in outdoor dining areas, the new policy is sure to be a boon to local eateries and the larger community, said county Supervisor Don Knabe.

“Guidelines have been established to protect food safety and ensure safety for all patrons,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, the county’s top health officer. “We urge all dog owners to follow these guidelines in order to provide the best possible dining experience for both people and dogs.”

Among other stipulations, the new guidelines prohibit food preparation on the patios and prohibit restaurant employees from having direct contact with pets.

In addition, eatery owners are obligated to follow local city ordinances related to sidewalk, public nuisance and sanitation issues, authorities said.

The new policy affects LA County restaurants inspected by the Public Health Department. Areas not subject to the policy include Pasadena, Long Beach and Vernon.

Housing Bright Spot: Pending Home Sales Rise, Market on Uptrend

Pending home sales are on an upward trend, which has been uneven but meaningful since reaching a cyclical low last April, and are well above a year ago, according to the National Association of REALTORS®.

The Pending Home Sales Index, a forward-looking indicator based on contract signings, rose 2.0 percent to 97.0 in January from a downwardly revised 95.1 in December and is 8.0 percent higher than January 2011 when it was 89.8. The data reflects contracts but not closings.

The January index is the highest since April 2010 when it reached 111.3 as buyers were rushing to take advantage of the home buyer tax credit.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, says this is a hopeful indicator going into the spring home-buying season. “Given more favorable housing market conditions, the trend in contract activity implies we are on track for a more meaningful sales gain this year. With a sustained downtrend in unsold inventory, this would bring about a broad price stabilization or even modest national price growth, of course with local variations.”

The PHSI in the Northeast rose 7.6 percent to 78.2 in January and is 9.8 percent above a year ago. In the Midwest the index declined 3.8 percent to 88.1 but is 10.8 percent higher than January 2011. Pending home sales in the South increased 7.7 percent to an index of 109.1 in January and is 10.5 percent above a year ago. In the West the index fell 4.4 percent in January to 101.9 but is 0.7 percent above January 2011.

“Movements in the index have been uneven, reflecting the headwinds of tight credit, but job gains, high affordability and rising rents are hopefully pushing the market into what appears to be a sustained housing recovery,” Yun says. “If and when credit availability conditions return to normal, home sales will likely get a 15 percent boost, speed up the home-price recovery, and thereby significantly reduce the number of homeowners who are underwater.”

The 20th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party

The 20th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party took place at The City of West Hollywood Park in Beverly Hills, California on February 26, 2012.   A white carpet was rolled out for the party.  An hour before the televised 84th annual Academy Award show Sir Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, strolled down the white carpet . Bringing the proper amount of glitter to the affair, John was decked out in an embellished black jacket with his initials spelled out.

This year’s event will be sponsored by Chopard, Neuro Drinks and Wells Fargo.   The show featured a special performance by the Grammy Nominated and Billboard chart-topping band, Foster the People.

“We were thrilled when Sir Elton John asked us to play his Academy Awards party,” said Foster the People front-man Mark Foster.  “His foundation has globally impacted the lives of millions of people suffering from HIV/AIDS and we’re honored to be involved in any way we can.”

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) was established as a nonprofit organization in the United States in 1992 and as a registered charity in the United Kingdom in 1993 by Sir Elton John. Together, both entities have raised more than $225 million for worthy programs in 55 countries around the globe since inception. Today, the Foundation is one of the world’s leading nonprofit HIV/AIDS organizations supporting innovative HIV prevention programs, efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, and direct care and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS.
