Host's Guide Holiday 2011: 100 Wines
"Personality is to a man what perfume is to a flower." Despite his reputation for fast living, the man who became famous for breaking the bank at Monte Carlo, steel magnate Charles M. Schwab, probably did not realize that his often-quoted analogy applies to wine as well. Just as certain flowers exude their signature scent, so do some special wines reveal consistent personalities, though the particulars of taste and texture may vary slightly from vintage to vintage. Château Latour is always Château Latour, and Krug is always Krug. Those of us who journey through the colorful world of the grape encounter many different characters, but with certain labels, as with certain people, we form a lasting bond.
During the holiday season, we share these special bonds every time we entertain, introducing one friend or colleague to another—and, at the same time, acquainting all of the people in our lives with the wines that best suit their personal tastes. With this in mind, we have assembled an impressive and varied array of vinous individuals with very different personality profiles—from subtle and soft to bold and aggressive—in effort to help you find the perfect match for every palate on your list.
