Beverly Hills Film Festival to Open With 'The Black Tulip'

The Afghanistan-set drama marks its U.S. premiere on April 25.

The Beverly Hills International Film Festival opens April 25 with the U.S. premiere of The Black Tulip, a drama filmed entirely in Afghanistan.

The film, directed by Sonia Nassery Cole, will mark its debut at the at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences at 7:30 p.m. It was Afghanistan's official entry for the 2010 Oscars' foreign film category, and centers on a family's fight for freedom against the encroaching Taliban.

"This year’s line-up is a stellar representation of talented filmmakers from around the globe," said festival director Nino Simone in a statement. "We are honored to be screening The Black Tulip, as we feel that it is a moving and true portrayal of the human turmoil and personal struggles happening in Afghanistan today."

The festival, dubbed BHFF, involves 50 films, five days of red carpets, networking events, panel discussions and parties; a closing ceremony and gala will be held at the Beverly Hills' Four Seasons on April 29. Oscar-nominated actress Anne Archer will be honored there with the 5th Annual Legends Award.

Also getting recognition: Mardik Martin, USC professor and screenwriter for Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets and Raging Bull, will receive the the 2012 Parajanov-Vartanov Institute Award. Martin is among the screenwriters on the Writer Guild of America's list of 101 greatest screenplays ever penned.
