The world's automakers have been unveiling some of the models set for debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, which runs November 19-28 in Los Angeles, California.
The show, which is traditionally dominated by green technology, will host more than 50 debuts, of which 20 are expected to be unseen global introductions.
Among the most anticipated, Kia is set to introduce the hybrid Optima Sedan and Saab will showcase the 9-4X crossover, described as an "important next step in the Swedish brand's renaissance."
Amid some 26 press conferences though, visitors and exhibitors alike will be aware that this year's LA Auto Show will hold a special place in history as the first mass-market electric cars are set to hit the road at around the same time.
Both the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf will be on display alongside over 12 electric drive vehicles set to arrive in the near future.
Mitsubishi's electric i-MiEV, redesigned for the US market, will make its official debut, as will Toyota's RAV4 EV, developed jointly with Tesla and set to hit the market in 2012.
Also set to wow crowds are the entrants to the 2010 Design Challenge, which asked studios to envision a 1,000 lb (454 kg) four-person vehicle that is comfortable, safe and practical.
Entries include vehicles made from organic materials, engines powered by compressed air and a futuristic rickshaw that plugs into a city's transport infrastructure to deliver a smooth, luxurious journey for passengers.
The LA Auto Show is open to the public November 19-28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
