The controversy concerning the integrity of farmers markets in California continues to be discussed. Last week there was a town hall meeting where officials from the California Department of Food and Agriculture met with concerned citizens.
The week before that, Beverly Hills Farmers' Market manager Greta Dunlap appeared before the California State Board of Food and Agriculture in Sacramento during the first California Certified Farmers' Markets Listening Session.
"It was a very positive experience," Dunlap said. "I genuinely felt they were concerned and were asking us for help to make sure farmers do not bring cheaper produce from Mexico and then claim it was grown in California."
Dunlap told agriculture officials that market managers need to step up to the plate and make sure they're inspecting the farms whose products they carry. She also asked that a training program be created to teach market managers how to spot suspicious goods. Dunlap also voiced that the 'stall fee' be increased to raise funds for the inspection of farms.
Supporters of the Beverly Hills Farmers' Market who wish to voice their concerns may send an email to the California Secretary of Agriculture at cfm@cdfa.ca.gov
