The average household in Beverly Hills spends $100,450 a year, more than double the national average of $38,780, according to a new Bundle.com study.
The research site looked at 2010 household spending habits across the country and Beverly Hills is near the top of the list. The site does not break out spending by ZIP code, so it is impossible to determine whether the city's famed 90210 residents spent more than their fellow citizens.
Food, health care and shopping are what residents spend the most on. That bodes well for Beverly Hills' many restaurants and health care providers—including plastic surgeons.
Compared with the national average, city residents spent: 204 percent more on food; 215 percent more for health care; 185 percent more for shopping; 144 percent more for "travel and leisure"; 93 percent more on home-related expenses (excluding mortgages); and 67 percent more on transportation.
Beverly Hills residents' spending habits put the area among the 25 most expensive suburbs in the country, according to the website BusinessInsider.com. But the city’s $100,450 spending figure is less than the $115,827 per household average for the above-mentioned 25 regions.
A handful of California cities are in the top 25, according to Bundle.com: Los Gatos spends $124,663 per household; Los Altos spends $119,765; Newport Beach spends $91,367; Palo Alto spends $90,773.
Beverly Hills' spending doesn’t come close, however, to the highest in the nation. That honor goes to Medina, WA, where average household spending is $146,113.
