Reality TV gives viewers a glimpse into the lives of others — famous celebrities, or soon-to-be — following their trials and tribulations with more than a handful of drama along the way.
Viewers get to peek into the homes where reality TV celebrities live, or where they stayed during the filming of the show and sometimes the scenes are not so pretty. Pets run rampant, peeing on expensive carpets, celebs fight to save their homes from foreclosure, and then there are the occasional domestic flare-ups. The majority of homes are located in Los Angeles and most of them have several thousand feet of living space, as well as a pool and many other TV-worthy amenities.
What is the status of these homes now? Many of these homes are for sale — stuck on the real estate market with huge price cuts — or, were recently sold. Here’s a rundown:
“The Osbournes” House” (below)
Status: On the market for $13.5 million
From 2002 through 2005, viewers were entertained by the family life of Ozzy Osbourne, his wife Sharon Osbourne and two of their children, Jack and Kelly, as well as the antics of their many dogs in MTV’s The Osbournes. Much of the show was filmed in the Osbourne’s home — an enormous and eclectic estate in Beverly Hills. Shortly after the show ended, the family sold the home to singer Christina Aguilera for $11.5 million. However, with Xtina’s recent divorce, she’s unloading the quirky property, which features a master suite with a raised-bed platform, red chandeliers, and curving staircase. Currently, the diva has the property listed for $13.5 million, but seeing that median Beverly Hills home values (currently $ 1,911,800) are dropping year-over-year, and the home has been on the market for over six months, Aguilera could face a price cut.
“The Hills” House (below)
Status: On the market for $2.25 million
Lauren Conrad, or “LC” as she was called in her younger days on Laguna Beach, picked up a Hollywood Spanish-style estate in 2008 for $2.36 million while she was filming the popular reality show “The Hills.” Lauren and her best friend Lo Bosworth moved into the main house, while another cast member, Audrina Patridge moved into the detached guest house (or converted garage.) Now that the show is long over, and Lauren has distanced herself as a fashion designer and blogger, she’s unloading the estate and has placed it on the Hollywood real estate market for $2.25 million — less than her purchase price. Not only was “The Hills” home a great setting for catfights, it’s filled with beautiful touches like refinished hardwood floors, wrought-iron railings and Spanish floor tiles.
“American Idol” House (below)
Status: Recently sold for $11.2 million
Like some of its contestants, the American Idol house didn’t last long as a reality house. It disappeared before the season was over due to a myriad of reasons, headlined by reports of haunting. American Idol castmates complained of flickering lights, a spider infestation, and a sheet floating down the hallway. However, the icing on the cake was probably the leaking roof and producers had the singers move out. The home was then listed on the Beverly Glen real estate market for $12 million. Apparently the new buyer was able to use the haunting to their advantage and negotiated the final price down to $11.2 million. The Tuscan-style compound sits on over two acres and has 9 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms, 28-foot-high ceilings in the great room, and dual, winding staircases in the grand entry.
“The Apprentice” House – Season 6 (below)
Status: Available for rent $49,000/a month
Want to start your own reality TV show? The perfect television setting is now available for rent at a whopping $49,000 a month. This gated home, which is on the Beverly Hills real estate rental market, was good enough for “The Donald” — Donald Trump — and season six of his show “The Apprentice.” With 9,000 square feet of living space, 9 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, 4 bars and 3 reception rooms, it’s the perfect size for television, or as the listing states, special events or corporate parties.
“Jersey Shore” House (below)
Status: Available for one-night rentals $2,500
The “Jersey Shore” house is almost as memorable as the castmates of the MTV reality show. When they were not out on the town, at the gym or working on their tans (GTL), Snooki, Pauly, Vinny, The Situation, and the rest of the crew spent most of their days and late nights at the brown-shingled beachfront home and in the hot tub. You can re-create your own version of the Jersey Shore since the home on the Seaside Heights real estate market is available for rent for $2,500/night for “up to 12 people.”
“Real Housewives” Homes (below)
Status: Foreclosures, loan modifications, short sales, bankruptcies
We all know that many of the woman in the Real Housewives series have their share of housing troubles, and unfortunately, few sell under traditional means. The quick rundown: the Real Housewives of Orange County had a foreclosure notice for Peggy Tanous, a loan modification for Alexis Bellino and short sale for Tamra Barney as well as threats of an eviction for Lynne Curtin. Among the Real Housewives In Atlanta, there was an eviction for NeNe Leakes and a foreclosure for Lisa Wu Hartwell, not to mention bankruptcy for Teresa Giudice in New Jersey. Whew!
“The Anna Nicole Smith Show” House (below)
Status: On the market for $1,750,000
Like Anna Nicole herself, the home that served as the stage for “The Anna Nicole Show” has had its share of controversy. Once the home of the late star, it was passed on to Anna Nicole’s daughter Dannielynn and her natural father, Larry Birkhead. In March 2011, Howard K. Stern, one-time love of Smith and executor of her will, gained the court’s permission to transfer the home under his name. Stern recently put Anna Nicole Smith’s home on the Studio City real estate market for $1,750,000. Described as “the perfect location for the entertainment industry,” the home has 4,700 square feet of living space, 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
“Growing Up Gotti” House (below)
Status: On the market for $2,895,000
America’s favorite (television) mafia family faced foreclosure on the home featured largely in the show “Growing up Gotti,” which featured Victoria Gotti, the daughter of the late mafia don, John Gotti, and her sons. Gotti was able to cut a deal on the white-pillared piece of Old Westbury real estate with the bank, allowing her to sell the home. The 5-bedroom, 4.5-bath house is presently listed for $2,895,000 and its history includes some major price chops. Median Old Westbury home values are currently $1,535,400.
“The Newlyweds” House (below)
Status: Sold in November 2010 for $2.1 million
Sometimes a reality TV show is not the best way to keep love alive, as was demonstrated by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey in their TV show “The Newlyweds.” The show ran for three seasons, ending in 2005. The couple announced their separation shortly after and then their love nest appeared on the Calabasas real estate market for $3.4 million. It later sold to “Malcolm in the Middle” star Justin Tyler Berfield. Justin then sold the home in 2010 after a series of dramatic price cuts for $2.1 million. Turns out even modern architecture and over 6,000 square feet of living space wasn’t enough of a sway for buyers in a down market.
“Hogan Knows Best” House (below)
Status: On the market for $8,871,527
Hulk Hogan’s house was first listed for a whopping $25 million in 2006 but with no buyers, the home and setting of the reality TV show “Hogan Knows Best” was taken off the Belleair real estate market. In 2009, the home was back on for $13.9 million. Even with that massive price cut, the listing price has been chopped four times and is still on the market, currently for $8,871,527. The home may have to drop a bit more as median Belleair home values are dropping 15.6 percent year-over-year. Hogan’s home is nearly as over-the-top as the pro wrestler with 17,000 square feet of living space, 5 bedrooms, 9.5 bathrooms, and “house bling” like hand-carved limestone counter tops, custom copper sinks and hand-carved oak floor tiles.
“Flipping Out” House (below)
Status: Sold in October 2010 for $2,325,000
This was the home of America’s most neurotic flipper — Jeff Lewis of Bravo’s real estate docu-series “Flipping Out.” Lewis’ popular show, featuring his trusty assistant, Jenni Pulos, and housekeeper Zoila Chavez, gives us a front-row seat to the stresses and anxieties that surround the business of flipping high-end homes in L.A. This home is in the Hollywood Hills real estate market and was known as “Valley Oak Two.” It was one of Lewis’ flip projects as well as his personal residence for a while. Lewis purchased the home in March 2007 for $1,710,000, fixed it up, then listed it on the market in 2008 for $3,195,000. The price was reduced all the way to $2,495,000 before it sold for $2,325,000 on October 12, 2010.
