While fashionistas have been glued to the runway during Fashion Week (or, their computers for limited-edition Missoni), we’ve been looking at the homes of fashion designers — where the inspiration and magic happens before the models hit the runway. While many fashion designers prefer apartments in the fashion capitals of the world — Paris or Milan, for example — there are a few designers that have homes on this side of the Atlantic, in New York or L.A. Take a look:
Vera Wang (below)
Although Vera Wang designs a number of styles, she’s best known for her celebrity-favored wedding gowns; Kim Kardashian wore three gowns by Wang in her recent wedding to Kris Humphries. According to the Wall Street Journal, the designer has been spending more time in Los Angeles and decided to purchase a mid-century modern house in star-studded Trousdale Estates for a reported $10 million. The home was once owned by Burt Reynolds and was completely renovated top-to-bottom by celebrity designer Steve Hermann.
Christian Audigier (below)
Très chic! Christian Audigier’s home, which exudes fashion (check out the living room with pink detailing, above), recently hit the Los Angeles real estate market for $8.625 million. Although Audigier’s designs for his Ed Hardy line were inspired by tattoos and graphic art, his home does not have the same aesthetic. Much of Audigier’s 7-bed, 7-bath home is elegant, featuring a grand foyer, tall ceilings and several outdoor living spaces.
Donna Karan (below)
Her name is synonymous with New York and her ready-wear line is called DKNY (Donna Karan New York). True to form, Karan owns a sizable chunk of New York real estate in the Hamptons. She recently added a fourth beach mansion to the block of East Hamptons oceanfront property she owns. In an interview with Architectural Digest in 2009, Karan said that her late husband had her promise that she would build a house on the property for each of their three children. Currently, Karan’s daughter lives in one of the mansions.
Marc Jacobs (below)
The celebrity real estate blogs were all a-flutter when it was revealed that designer Marc Jacobs was finally moving into the Superior Ink townhouse he purchased in 2010. He ditched the penthouse rental he had at the Chelsea Mercantile, for which he was paying $20,000 a month, earlier this year. Jacobs reportedly plopped down almost $13 million for the nearly 4,500 square feet townhouse — the few extra million for the $10.5 million place was for a few additions and designer fixings.
Ralph Lauren (below)
Ralph Lauren’s home in Bedford, NY, located an hour north of the city, is only one of his residences. The designer of All-American style has five homes: a Manhattan apartment, two in upstate New York, one in Colorado and another in Jamaica. As a born and raised New Yorker, he spends the majority of his time there. Both of his New York residences, his home within the pricey confines of Bedford real estate as well as the beach home in Montauk, have been featured in Architectural Digest.
Anna Sui (below)
American designer Anna Sui launched her first collection in New York in 1991 and has remained on the top list of U.S. fashion designers ever since. A Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Sui currently lives in Manhattan and added a third penthouse to her collection of homes in April 2011. She already owned two apartments in the Greenwich Village co-op, a ninth-floor one-bedroom and a separate penthouse into which she expanded in 2008. Sui’s apartment interiors, like Ralph Lauren, have been featured in several design magazines and most recently in Elle Decor.
Jill Stuart (below)
Like many of the other fashion designers, celebrity-favorite designer Jill Stuart owns a New York penthouse. Rather than living on the Upper East Side, Stuart and her family live in the uber-chic Urban Glass House in a full–floor apartment. The modern space has 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows and a 2,000-square-foot terrace with views of downtown Manhattan and the Hudson River. There’s currently one apartment available in the Urban Glass House; it’s listed on the SoHo real estate market for $1.675 million.
Strutting Their Stuff: Homes of Fashion Designers - Vera Wang - Christian Audigier - Donna Karan - Marc Jacobs - Ralph Lauren - Anna Sui - Jill Stuart
Having seen a few of these homes, my favorite is Vera & Ralph Lauren's homes.
