Poll: Did You Feel Monday's Beverly Hills Earthquake? - Beverly Hills, CA Patch

Poll: Did You Feel Monday's Beverly Hills Earthquake?

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 3.2 shaker was centered in Beverly Hills.

Update 4:53 a.m.:

The Beverly Hills Police Department said there have been no reports of damage in the city after Monday's magnitude-3.2 earthquake, but that some 50 alarm calls had come in.

"It's a combination of automobiles, businesses and residences," Beverly Hills police Sgt. Michael Publiker said. "We have been inundated by alarm calls."

Publiker said that the shaking from an earthquake triggers the motion detectors in alarms. When an alarm goes off, a security company notifies the police.

"If we receive a call from an alarm company, we dispatch," Publiker said.

Update 4:22 a.m.:

A magnitude-3.2 earthquake centered in Beverly Hills shook much of Los Angeles' Westside early Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Beverly Hills is located on the West Beverly Hills Lineament fault, an extension of the Newport-Inglewood Fault System.

Described as a sharp jolt, the quake hit just before 3:27 a.m. and was felt from Marina del Rey to Hollywood.

Caltech seismologist Lucy Jones told KNX radio the quake was shallow, on a fault near the surface, and that quakes close to the surface are typically widely felt.

Jessica Turner of the USGS in Golden, Colo., told KNX radio that the quake was part of Southern California's "normal seismicisty" and that aftershocks should be expected.

The quake was in a range that does not generally cause structural damage. Los Angeles firefighters at 106 stations across the city were checking their areas for damage. No problems had been immediately reported.

At 4:09 a.m. Los Angeles Fire Department Spokesman Brian Humphrey issued a statement saying the LAFD had concluded its "Earthquake Emergency Mode" citywide ground and air survey.

"There is no significant damage, injury or loss of life in the City of Los Angeles we can attribute to the 3:26AM PRELIM M3.3 #earthquake near Beverly Hills," Humphrey stated. "The department is now in a normal operating mode."

The quake woke up people all across Los Angeles. Here are just some of the tweets that came through in the minutes following the shaking:
