Where else but in Beverly Hills can you enjoy a simple Chinese meal for $75 per person? The answer is Mr. Chow on North Camden Drive. Yes, of course it's better than your average wok joint. On your way in, paparazzi swarm Ashton Kutcher as he walks in to the WME2 (William Morris Endeavor Entertainment) building across the street. He can charm anyone from afar. I'm weak-kneed but we enter.
Black and white checkered floor, high white ceilings, and giant black and white orbs surround the tall, narrow space. Executive chefs Yi Jia Qian and Pui Lam Tsang are cooking and it smells amazing. My friend and I decided to make an evening out of shrimp. I have a Forrest Gump flashback:
"Shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp Creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan-fried, deep-fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich."
We ordered shrimp five ways: two shrimp appetizers, two shrimp entrees and—you guessed it—shrimp fried rice. Every dish tasted completely different from the next.
Better than the food was Wayne Gretzky sitting behind me at a nearby table. He was with a beautiful, mature blond woman who looked a little like his wife, Janet Jones, but I'm pretty sure wasn't. Then walked in a few famous young faces who I know I've seen but just can't place.
The waiter puts the napkin in my lap. My water never runs out. Celebrities abound. Well, maybe the dinner and show were worth the admission price after all.
