Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa began holding meetings today to get public input about a proposed football stadium in downtown Los Angeles, reports the LA Times.

Separately, stadium developer AEG announced yesterday that it will begin what is expected to be a year-long process of drafting an environmental impact plan for the NFL field, which would be located on the LA Live campus.

Despite plans for development still being underway, the stadium was recently named Farmers Field after AEG reached a deal for naming rights with Farmers Insurance. Local elected officials and AEG head honchos have insisted that the venue won't cost taxpayers any money, and could bring as many as 7,000 new jobs to Los Angeles.

Plans to bring an NFL team to downtown Los Angeles haven't gone uncontested -- Farmers Field is in direct competition with a proposal by developer Majestic Realty Company to construct a stadium in City of Industry.

Let the battle begin! (Or, really, continue...)
