When Academy Award-winning actress Anjelica Huston married sculptor Robert Graham in 1992, she reportedly told him that she would not move to the bohemian city of Venice, CA, unless he built her a house to live in. The end result was a modern beach-front structure, designed by the artist himself and constructed in 1994.
Robert Graham passed away in 2008 and Anjelica Huston’s home is now on the Venice real estate market, priced at $16.8 million. Huston’s other primary residence is a ranch in Three Rivers, CA.
This piece of Venice real estate is not for everyone; the 4,063 square foot home is ultra-contemporary and sleek, with architectural elements emphasizing structure and light. High ceilings and boxy alcoves present the perfect place to highlight pieces of art.
“Light is essential to the design,” Graham told Architectural Digest. “The unpainted plaster actively picks it up, absorbs it and throws it back.”
“He gave me a very beautiful shell in which to place my oyster,” Huston said in the article.
Surrounded by high walls, the 3-bedroom, 3.5 bath home is located just 200 feet from Venice Beach. An enormous courtyard complete with black-bottomed pool and spa, and immense coral tree, sit in the middle of the three-lot estate — a total of nearly 14,000 square feet.
A detached “artist in residence” studio and gallery shares the courtyard with the white-stucco home. The gallery has high, exposed ceilings, podiums to display finished works and a curving red metal staircase leading to a narrow balcony.
Venice Beach has long been an enclave of artists and celebrities, and several modern compounds, including the home of the late Dennis Hopper, line the beach boardwalk.
