One of the most anticipated joys of the holiday season, besides lots of presents, is going to the movies. This year, the array of movies opening in December is vast, and sure to please millions of viewers.
From the director of the hugely successful Lord of the Rings series, The Hobbit opens this winter to the delight of Tolkien fans worldwide. Adapted from the novel, the movie follows the adventures of a curious hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, and his friends, Gandalf the Grey and a rowdy group of dwarves. The story will be split across three separate movies and stars Martin Freeman in the main role. Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Cate Blanchett will reprise their roles from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Django Unchained, like 2009’s Inglourious Basterds, will be released on Christmas Day. Director Quentin Tarantino will deliver his incarnation of a Western in signature style, sure to involve crackling dialogue, cinematic homage, and irresistible brutality. Set in the wilderness of the antebellum South, Django Unchained follows the story of an ex-slave, played by Jamie Foxx, on a manhunt for the villain who kidnapped his wife. The title character makes a deal with the devil, a vicious German bounty hunter played by Cristoph Waltz, to track down some evil racist gangsters. This star-studded film features actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Don Johnson, Samuel L. Jackson, and many more.
No holiday season is complete without a movie for the kids, and Rise of the Guardians fits the role perfectly. This DreamWorks animated feature stars the vocal talents of Alec Baldwin and Hugh Jackman. After an evil spirit named Pitch wreaks havoc on Earth, an Avengers-like group of immortal guardians rises up to protect the innocent from destruction.
Playing for Keeps (2012) stars Gerard Butler as George, a former soccer star who’s trying to get his life together, who becomes his son’s soccer coach and tries to fall in love again. Even though George is well into his 40s, he has a lot of growing up to do. Beyond self-discovery, this movie is about love, family, and being part of team. The movie opens on December 7th.
For those who crave action this season, look for Tom Cruise’s latest movie Jack Reacher. Reacher, as many would know from the Lee Child novels, is a homicide detective who finds himself in a bigger mess than he expected. After five are left for dead, Reacher is called in to chase down a former military sniper with a penchant for civilian violence.
And finally, for our comedy selection this holiday season, Parental Guidance mixes hilarity with family drama. With cross-generational appeal, this movie stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as grandparents coming into town to take care of the grandkids. Conflict soon builds as the grandparents have a very different approach to babysitting than the parents had in mind.
